2019 Honor The Earth
“Honor the Earth was established by Winona LaDuke and Indigo Girls Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, in 1993. In our 20+ years of operation, we have re-granted over two million dollars to over 200 Native American communities... ...We believe a sustainable world is predicated on transforming economic, social, and political relationships that have been based on systems of conquest toward systems based on just relationships with each other and with the natural world. As our mission states, we are committed to restoring a paradigm that recognizes our collective humanity and our joint dependence on the Earth... ...Honor the Earth is interested in the transition from this destructive economy and way of life, back towards land-based economics. In this land-based economics, we see that intergenerational and inter-species equity are valued, that cyclical systems are reaffirmed, that not all “natural resources” are up for extraction, and that we behave responsibly. We recognize the wealth of a land-based economy because we have lived it, and we will continue to work to keep these waters for wild rice, these trees for maple syrup, our lakes for fish, and our land and aquifers present for all relatives....”
2018 Global Growers
Global Growers is the only organization in Georgia that connects the agricultural talent of the local refugee community to opportunities in sustainable agriculture. Global Growers grew out of the tremendous demand among international farmers, many who came to Atlanta as refugees of war, to reconnect to their agricultural heritage in their new home. Recognizing this exceptional talent, Global Growers connects local families to land, education, and markets in order to build healthier communities and strengthen our local economy. We are committed to cultivating diverse farmers who are traditionally under served by mainstream agricultural service providers."
2017 Southern Center for Human Rights
I learned about the Southern Center for Human Rights in 2015 when Charlie Scandrett was released from prison in Clayton, GA. Charlie was serving his 18th year of a 30 year sentence for a minor drug charge and the SCHR took his case to modify the sentence to time served. Unfair sentencing and exorbitant fines for non-violent crimes feed a devastating cycle of poverty. SCHR provides legal representation to people facing the death penalty, challenges human rights violations in prisons and jails and seeks through litigation and advocacy to improve legal representation for poor people accused of crimes, and advocates for criminal justice reforms on behalf of those affected by the system in the Southern United States.
2016 Pediatric Public Health Initiative
Through community and clinical programs, childhood health policy and advocacy, and robust evaluation, the Pediatric Public Health Initiative works with many partners, including Flint’s heroic parents and kids, as a center of excellence, with the primary goal of mitigating the impact of the Flint Water Crisis and serving as a national resource for best practices.
